Life Cycle Assessment in the product development process
We’ve recently introduced Life Cycle Assessments at Studio Elk.
It’s a fairly unconventional move, but one that we believe is a necessary piece of the sustainable design process if we are to achieve meaningful and measurable impact reductions.
Why would a design consultancy offer LCA, and why should you care?
Three main reasons:
Measuring the environmental impacts of your existing products allows you to focus your resources on impact hotspots for maximum reductions.
LCA within the design process enables informed decision-making and gives our clients confidence that we're on track to hit sustainability targets.
Verifying our design's impact reductions allows our clients to talk about their new sustainability credentials without greenwashing.
We understand that achieving an ROI on sustainability initiatives is important. Focusing your resources, informed decision-making and greenwash-free marketing are key ways to keep costs down and maximise returns.
Big impact is about leverage
When it comes to designing sustainable products, it's easy to spend a lot of time and money in the wrong places. You get caught up in making changes that barely move the needle.
LCA helps us figure out the biggest levers to pull. Maybe it's a particular material, manufacturing process or the product's energy consumption that causes the biggest proportion of its environmental impact.
Then we can focus our efforts where we know we'll achieve significant impact reductions.
No more randomly pulling levers without knowing whether they're working.
